New Classes Coming Up: Hula Hoop Dance, & Chen Style Tai Chi!

Happy new year, and we're ringing it in with new classes for you to get involved in!

HulaHoopla will be offering winter Hula Hoop Dance classes ever Tuesday from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. There will be an intensive beginner series from Jan. 4th to Feb. 8th, no experience necessary! The intensive intermediate series will be from Feb. 15th to Mar. 22nd, to take it to the next level. The cost is $60 for each 6-week series, or $15 drop-in. Want a relaxing workout? Yan Li, through The Wellspring School, will be leading Chen-style Tai Chi on Fridays from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, from Jan. 14th to May 6th. Call 503-752-4840 for more information.

Current Art Exhibit at the Bamboo Grove: Sanna-Lisa Gesang-Gottowt

Sanna-Lisa Gesang-Gottowt grew up in a commune outside of Stockholm, Sweden, in a very creative and politically aware environment. In 2003, Gesang-Gottowt moved to Portland, Oregon, where she studied art at Marylhurst University. In 2009, she completed the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. This is her third solo-show since graduating; her work has also been included in group shows at Blackfish Gallery, GalleryHomeland and Worksound. Her thesis was a combination of photography, painting, sculpture and installation that used imagery of, among other objects, walls and fences to explore connections between the personal and up close with world politics. The paintings in the current exhibition are a continuation of this exploration of signs of inclusion, exclusion, belonging and the idea of identity that can come with it.

Donations very welcome... Show starts at 8 pm. The teahouse will be open, with loose leaf tea, beer and wine available for purchase.

The Bamboo Grove is currently hosting Frank Cordelle's photography exhibit, a diverse collection of female nudes more than a quarter of a century in the making. These photographs are accompanied by personal statements that provide an emotional context for the images. The Century Project has been featured in Oprah Magazine and the East Bay Guardian.

Zhu Lin Renga

We have a new weekly event coming to the Bamboo Grove Salon! Tuesdays are getting full with Tango practica and now with Zhu Lin Renga. Our first Renga event will be tonight, September 22nd, from 7 - 9 pm. This is a collaborative poetry event and there will be loose leaf tea, beer and wine available.

From the Zhu Lin Renga blog (zhulinrenga.wordpress.com):

"Renga is the Japanese pronunciation of lian ge 連歌, the Chinese characters meaning “to link together” and verse, or song. The Japanese perfected this method of poetry, but its roots may lie in Qin dynasty China. In China, it was a spontaneous collaboration of master poets, in which each contributed lines that built on each other; each contribution played upon the meaning of the previous contribution, adding new meaning while also retaining the line of thought. The end result was a poem full of layers and personalities, capturing a dialogue through poetry.

Zhu Lin Renga is our own take on the tradition of Renga poetry.

The Chinese character of wu 五 means 5. It looks like an hourglass. Each week, we will write a renga poem, with the help of 5 contributors, selected by chance through an impartial drawing. The 5 contributors will write 2 lines, going around the circle twice. At the end of the two turns, each will contribute one more line, for a total of 55 lines for the evening.

At the end of the season (we plan to have 4 seasons of 12 weeks of poetry), we will print the Renga into a handbound book on Zhu Lin Salon’s own printing press, illustrated by local artists, and publish it."

Labor Day Weekend

We are still meeting for figure drawing this Sunday afternoon...while many will be relaxing on the Oregon coast this labor day weekend, we'll be sweating it out inside the Bamboo Grove Salon studio. As always, 1 - 3 pm, $5! We might be holding figure drawing work shops too in addition to open drawing sessions, so stay posted.

Call to Printmakers

Our first annual 'End of Summer Clothesline Print Show' will be happening September 17th (third Thursday) in the Bamboo Grove Gallery, and we're still accepting submissions! We'll be stringing clotheslines up across and gallery and clipping on prints - visitors to the gallery can purchase a print the day of the show and take it home to 'save it from the rain.'

Drink Tea and Play Go

Wednesday night is Go night! Local wei ch'i masters play in our teahouse every Wednesday night from 7 - 10 pm. Come by and play or have some tea and watch.

This brutal Portland heatwave has spurred us on to add a few iced teas to our expanding tea menu. We have iced green, oolong and green jasmine tea. Right now our most popular tea is Chrysanthemum and Chinese Wolfberry iced tea - an earthy flavored and antioxidant rich combination. Chrysanthemum works well as a cooling herb and is especially soothing for a sore throat. Wolfberry gives the tea an unique nutty flavor and provides Vitamin C and Calcium among other nutrients.

We also have chilled salty plum tea for a buck!

August Art Opening: 3 Muses

For this upcoming first Friday we'll be showcasing three Portland artists in our 3 Muses show. The opening reception will take place August 7th, 6 - 9 pm at the Bamboo Grove Salon Gallery 134 SE Taylor (entrance on 2nd). We're excited to present original works by:

Julia Gfrorer: Julia is a local artist with a dynamic body of work behind her. Her mastery of the human figure is shown off with bold line drawings that manage to capture intense motion and fluidity even in the quietest moment. She is a skilled printmaker and letterpress operator and frequently runs the Zhu Lin press at the Bamboo Grove.

Linsay De Armond: Lindsay is an accomplished painter and drawer whose interest in girlhood, the Victorian era and mental illness makes for an eery and compelling collection of work. She has shown all over the Pacific Northwest, most recently at Opposable Thumb Gallery + Cafe. When she's not making incredible artwork, she sometimes models for us at our weekly figure drawing session.

Elena Cronin : Elena is a figurative artist whose beautiful and emotional art follows in the tradition of Austrian art nouveau and expressionism. Her vivid new work centers on her own body as subject, and is drawn and painted with the intimacy of first person perspective. She was recently featured at the Launch Pad Gallery and at the Fine Grind.

The Bamboo Grove will be offering weekly open figure drawing sessions starting this Sunday at 1 pm. We're holding it in the event room (pictured above) so there will be plenty of space and lots of natural light. Our model this Sunday is local figurative artist Lindsay De Armond, whose work we'll be featuring in next month's gallery show. Poses will be clothed and unclothed. All levels of experience welcome, just bring your own art supplies.

Time: Sundays 11 am - 1 pm

Jonathan W. Fischer is our first summer artist, and his bright colorful pieces are the perfect compliment to this shift in the weather. Jonathan is based out of Seattle and shows all over the U.S., with work displayed in Chicago, San Francisco and L.A. earlier this year. His stenciled graffiti work is incredibly layered and detailed, and we're lucky to have so many of his canvas and paper works to display. Here are a few of our favorites:

Thanks for checking out Bamboo Grove Salon's new blog! We'll be updating frequently with info about our gallery, teahouse and other events happening at the Grove. Our list of activities is growing, and it wont be long before we offer weekly figure drawing sessions, movie nights (on our awesome projector: Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman and other classics!), mahjong and SAKE (liquor lisence pending, very exciting).

We're tucked away in industrial Portland and sometimes miss out on what's going on outside this brick and mortar area, so if you've got art or event news that's happening off our block, let us know! We'd love to be more active in the Portland community.
